I've been thinking a lot about kids' rooms lately. My two are back to sharing again, at least for the next year until we find somewhere bigger. The boy-girl share is always a bit tricky, especially when they get a bit older, like my twelve and nine year old. Luckily, my son is very artistic and really appreciates the handmade, somewhat feminine touches. Not that I'd do a room all pink and flowery, but it can certainly have some artsy flourishes and be ok in his book. And my daughter is at that age - she's the twelve year old - where she doesn't want anything too young and girly. So it's a good balance.
I've taken the route of not going too planned and overly decorated. After all, this is a rental and I don't know how long we'll be here. We're going for that eclectic mish-mash of patterns and colours - using a lot of my vintage textiles that I brought over and a lot of the kids' art for the walls. To me these are the perfect rooms for children because they are meant to look sort of messy, like most kids tend to be. Rooms like these encourage children to tack up on the wall their latest painting or a colourful leaf they found on a walk and it all works together.
This first one is the odd one out, a bit too neutral for me, but I added it because I like that the beds don't match. Most people would think they have to be a matching pair, but how great that they don't?
Another mismatched bed set. In fact, mismatched everything.
Amazing colours.
My fave. In this case the beds do match, but the bedding doesn't. Great idea for a boy-girl set-up.
Chalkboard wall taken to the extreme. And that great black and white Ikea rug that shows up in even the fanciest of houses.
I LOVE these rooms.

Great post. I wrote about mixed-gender kids rooms when a friend was pregant and deciding who would sharw with whom, and my hand down favorite is the same as yours--Summer Ruffalo's house with the Jenny Lind beds and mismatched bedding, Perfect. Thanks Heather. I'm not sure what I'll do when my kids are grown up and don't want me messing with their room decor anymore - I love doing kids rooms! I'll check out your post.
