<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The British online magazine <a href="http://www.hearthomemag.co.uk/blog/home-tour-emily-henson">Heart Home</a> just republished a house tour they did back in 2013, featuring our rented home in North London. We'd only been living in this house for a few months and I really wasn't ready for a photographer to document things (story of my life?) But me being me, and never wanting to say no, I said yes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Since then, I've published <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Emily-Henson/e/B00QU72NUW/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1429444234&sr=1-1">two books</a>, I've started working with <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/blog/emily-henson-bohemia/">Anthropologie Europe</a> and A LOT has changed. Judging by these pictures, one of the main things that's changed is my personal interiors style. Granted, we had <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2011/03/happily-homeless.html">no furniture</a>, having sold it all to <span id="goog_836306447"></span><a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2011/03/moving-on.html">move back</a><span id="goog_836306448"></span> to London from LA, and I was in full on make do and mend spirit (<a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2012/09/make-what-do-you-get-when-you-cross-bed.html">here</a> and <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2012/08/diy-weekend.html">here</a>), but I have to admit that it's hard to look at the photos now. I reeeeally don't like much of what I was doing back then and I really don't think it represents my style. Having your home photographed repeatedly over the years is a bit like opening up a very personal diary and letting everyone read it. All my mistakes are exposed for everyone to judge! (And they do)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The photo above is from <a href="http://www.hearthomemag.co.uk/blog/home-tour-emily-henson">Heart Home</a> Magazine. The following images show the evolution of the exact same wall since that shoot, and they really tell a story about the way my brain works: Start with nothing. Attempt to make something from nothing. Overcompensate for having nothing by adding too many little bits of - you guessed it - nothing. Get overwhelmed by clutteredness of all the bits of nothing. Tear it all down. Start again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Image one, above: I had no furniture, but found some frames and a weird shelf on the street, made some bunting (Ugh! Really?) Faked it all out by adding flowers and veg to make it look lived-in - honestly, imagine it without all the greens - blander than bland. I've since donated anything remotely vintagey/kitschy to Stoke Newington's finest charity shops, slowly replacing them with things I actually like or - God forbid - leaving an empty space until I find something I like.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Image two, above: The day before photographing my home for my book <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/bohemian-modern">Bohemian Modern</a> I panicked, having spent 6 months working full time and travelling Europe in every spare moment photographing <i>amazing</i> homes for the book, and completely neglecting my own little hovel. I unearthed some wallpaper scraps, added decades worth of embarrassing family photos, lots of plants, and boom! Bohemian Modern in a flash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOsyqncXFXJUBTpdGNSwOR6_S7gr8h5MQ5D-1bFemO0YlNyXwW4xeMkPXILgj6XirNKiKxHoKV4UzG4RDcp1rbxZirVlF8zaeBNOSCGZkt_P-XIHX5dAzq9r41w1dKquIjzJlVvBQ4Xg4v/s1600/Emily+Henson+black+kitchen+wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOsyqncXFXJUBTpdGNSwOR6_S7gr8h5MQ5D-1bFemO0YlNyXwW4xeMkPXILgj6XirNKiKxHoKV4UzG4RDcp1rbxZirVlF8zaeBNOSCGZkt_P-XIHX5dAzq9r41w1dKquIjzJlVvBQ4Xg4v/s1600/Emily+Henson+black+kitchen+wall.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Image three: Last Friday. I'd worked an overnight shift on Thursday so had Friday off. I took a nap, woke up refreshed and was buzzing slightly from the huge coffee I'd just had - I needed a project! I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the messiness of the wall so I took off all the pictures and wallpaper, realised that blue-tac is rubbish and does in fact leave little marks even though it says it won't - there were hundreds - and realised I had to paint it. I bought some magnetic chalkboard paint and quickly slapped it on. Suddenly got inspired by the pattern on the dutch wax fabric I'd stapled onto the chair seats, attempted to copy it with chalk, with a plan to cover the whole wall. My arm started to ache at the tediousness of it. Gave up after one row.<br />
<br />
And that, my friends, is how my brain works. What can I say, planning is for suckers! All hail, the queen of slap-dash decorating (Er, that's me).<br />
<br />
For the full house tour head to <a href="http://www.hearthomemag.co.uk/blog/home-tour-emily-henson">Heart Home</a> magazine. Just promise not to judge too harshly. Particularly the shot where I thought crazy Dutch wax fabric curtains and painting the words "What are you waiting for?" on a frame would be calming for a bedroom...<br />
<br />
And to see yet another incarnation of my home, buy <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/bohemian-modern">Bohemian Modern</a> and look for the chapter called Urban Bohemian.<br />

I'll show how ridiculously easy and satisfying it is to make your own macrame plant holder with some very bohemian modern neon green string. You'll get to take home a cute little potted plant and your £10 fee will go towards a signed copy of my book (that makes it only a tenner, ok??)</div>

I've even made this nifty little contraption for the table for your knotting ease. What can I say, I'm a giver. Hope to see you there! x</div>

I'm working on a new pet project that I'm pretty excited about. It's an idea I had two years ago that I'm finally doing something about. It may lead to absolutely nothing and no-one will be interested or it may be the best thing I've ever done - who knows? But it's something I'm certain someone else will do and I will be filled with bitterness and self loathing for not at least trying. And I reeeally don't want that. Here's an outtake from the first shoot for this hush hush, still secret project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just to keep it interesting, I'll send a signed copy of my latest book Bohemian Modern to the first person who is interiors savvy enough to know whose house I was at, just by these rugs and this floor....</div>

Comment below for your chance to enter. And stay tuned for a full blog makeover in the coming weeks which will see me finally saying goodbye to blogger and moving to more sophisticated pastures. It will also include this new, and shall we say rather 'revealing' project. Thanks all! xx</div>

To celebrate the release of my second book <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1849756228/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1849754454&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1K19KE6XY55WMBPZRZQH">Bohemian Modern</a>, <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> have kindly offered to host a trio of workshops where I'll be teaching macrame (beginners macrame I might add). The tour kicks off tonight at the flagship store on London's Regent St where we'll be making something similar to these plant holders below, as featured in my book and photographed in the Danish home of the lovely garden designer and author <a href="http://meltdesignstudio.com/">Dorthe Kvist</a> of meltdesignstudio. Tonight's workshop has already sold out but pop by at 7.30 if you'd like to have your book signed or to just spy on the workshop. Otherwise, there are still spots available at the Guildford and Bath workshops in April. Check out the flyer below. Each participant takes home their own plant holder as well as a potted plant. (I bought beautiful succulents and I white washed some terracotta pots for tonight's workshop). The £10 fee can be put towards the purchase of the book as well which means you can get it for a tenner. A good deal all around.</div>

Sensory Overload<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spent a bit of time this morning updating my styling portfolio, since it's been a while. As I browsed through my images I realised that for someone who doesn't like colour or pattern, my work would be a major assault on the senses. Look at it! It's a neat freak, monochrome lover's worst nightmare. Well I never said I was a minimalist did I? Click <a href="http://emilyhensonstudio.com/">here </a>for the full collection of headache inducing images and don't forget to wear your sunnies.</div>

I'm off to Paris again this afternoon for my job with <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/">Anthropologie</a>, hence the Sunday blog post. Everyone keeps saying to me "you're so lucky" because I've been there so much recently. Lest you imagine I'm strolling the Seine and relaxing at cafes, let me enlighten you. I'll be working 12 hour days, getting covered in paint and dust, running around looking for the right tools, and saying the phrase "Je suis desole, mais je ne parle pas Francais" about a thousand times a day to customers who think I work in the shop. Follow me on <a href="http://instagram.com/lifeunstyled/">Instagram</a> or <a href="https://twitter.com/lifeunstyled">Twitter </a>to see what I get up to while I'm there.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8P28eoM-fUYDEisPV8S_UODlMt671XwFjDd3sYsra0S8hcecSfwOJ5vwwlnpUz3aM-wB4YWWyROm-yGx3dCtg09kJ17JFLb6hpFSg9ep1dAdzBQB4PsMSGZXBk-vJPZNRL5iCbnFcdMVe/s1600/Bohemian+Modern+and+Me.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8P28eoM-fUYDEisPV8S_UODlMt671XwFjDd3sYsra0S8hcecSfwOJ5vwwlnpUz3aM-wB4YWWyROm-yGx3dCtg09kJ17JFLb6hpFSg9ep1dAdzBQB4PsMSGZXBk-vJPZNRL5iCbnFcdMVe/s1600/Bohemian+Modern+and+Me.jpg" height="640" width="398" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2014 is over and despite feeling like I was going to lose my mind, I've come out the other side relatively unscathed. If you count being partly bald and having a serious teeth grinding problem unscathed (ignore the toupee and mouth guard if you run into me, ok?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But seriously, 2014 was a pretty nutty and stressful year for me. In March I said yes to both a new book deal and a new job. I thought I could somehow do a quite challenging full-time job for <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> at the exact same time as travelling Europe to make this book and oh yeah, be a mum to a teen and pre-teen. Add to the mix the death of my dad in March, and you've got a pretty intense month, followed by an equally intense year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But here we are in February 2015, almost a year later and I didn't get fired from Anthropologie (in fact, they extended my contract to work on another project for a few more months), my publisher just sent me a fat stack of books that I'm really proud of, my kids are still talking to me, and my husband hasn't left me, despite me being a pretty unpleasant person to be around for the past year. So I think it was worth it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>Bohemian Modern</i> has so much of what I love in interiors: colour, pattern, textiles, plants, originality, creativity. It's not all kilim rugs and dream catchers as you might expect from a book about bohemian interiors. I featured a number of different styles including a traditional barn on the windswept coast of Morocco, a Victorian loft in Tottenham, London, a huge converted mechanics garage near Amsterdam, and a grand town house in Ghent, Belgium. All very different from each other, all unique, and all occupied by creative rule breakers, doing interiors their own way.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really hope you enjoy it. I'd love to hear your feedback. If you do choose to buy it, I encourage you to support your local bookshop.</div>

And my house below, including the sofa where I currently sit. The real world styling of the sofa upon which I am now sprawled features the little photographed hot water bottle/ pajamas/piles of papers/used coffee cups scene. Oh sorry, did you picture me sitting here typing in leather jeans and red lipstick? Talk about bursting your bubble, right?<br />

I'll be putting a link up soon so that you can order signed copies of both Modern Rustic and Bohemian Modern, but in the meantime feel free to email me if you'd like to order either one. Otherwise head to any good bookstore to get your copy. And thank you!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Christmas in Nice, France</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I always look forward to the first few days of January as soon as the hussle of Christmas is over. If I'm not working, I have that mixed feeling of "make the most of it" and "oh god I should be working!" (Click <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2013/06/the-freelancers-dilemma.html">here</a> to be reminded of my never-ending fears of freelance life). I try my best to enjoy it and much like the rest of the planet, in early January I take some time to think about goals and dreams for the new year.<br />
<br />
Every year I write them down and keep them in a box and each year I read what I wrote the year before. Sometimes when I come to writing it all down I get a bit overwhelmed. I'm always talking about dreaming big, not being afraid to aim high and all that, but when it comes to my own dreams, sometimes I get scared. "How dare I aspire to such big ideas?" "Who do I think I am?" "That's never going to happen". And all kinds of other negative, unhelpful thoughts, otherwise known as self-doubt.<br />
<br />
This year I already know what I'm doing work-wise - at least for the first few months - and for that I'm grateful. I'll be continuing to work with <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> Europe, consulting on the visual side of some new European store openings. I've also got a couple of shoots planned for <a href="http://www.ikea.com/">IKEA</a> and I have a new book coming out in February called <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bohemian-Modern-Emily-Henson/dp/1849756228">Bohemian Modern</a> (more on that soon). All really exciting, if a little nerve-wracking. But I still like to dream up other things - what else would I like to happen? Where do I want to travel to? What experiences do I want to have with my family?<br />
<br />
This time last year one of the things I wrote down was that I wanted to travel a lot for work. I ended up travelling more in 2014 than any other year in my life, with at least 15 trips for my book, for Anthropologie, and with family, including Philadelphia, New York, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Marrakech, Ghent, Prague....I also wrote that I wanted go to Paris. Somehow I had gone my whole life without visiting the so-called 'City of Lights' and I felt it was time to rectify that. I ended up getting the contract with Anthropologie in March 2014 and went to Paris at least 4 or 5 times for them and also once for my anniversary. Madness, right? The phrase "Be careful what you wish for" has never felt so real...<br />
<br />
Let's not get too excited though. I also wished for buckets of money and a flatter stomach. I guess I'll just pop those on my 2015 wish list...<br />
<br />
I wish you all the best for 2015 and I hope you manage to make a few of your dreams come true. Thanks for your continued support over the years and for making me come back and write time and again.<br />
<br />
Above are a few snaps from some of my travels in 2014: A rooftop bar in Paris, me walking on water in Nice, lush plants at the Anthropologie head office in Philadelphia, Parisian graffiti (everything's cooler in French), halloween in Brooklyn (baby, nerd, Wednesday), and Christmas in Nice.<br />
<br />
(And here's what I was talking about at this time in <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2013/01/christmas-isnt-over-yet.html">2013</a> and <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2014/01/new-year-new-pillows.html">2014</a>).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Back in October I had the pleasure of styling the look-book for London-based, Australian designer <a href="http://www.amy-sia.com/">Amy Sia</a>. Amy is a really talented designer who hand-paints beautiful abstract designs in watercolour, scans them into her computer and manipulates them in photoshop. The result is a vibrant blur of colour and a cool blend of hand-made and digitally altered pattern. She puts her prints on everything from iPhone covers to scarves to bedding. For this shoot I styled Amy's pillow collection, a mad riot of colour that was in stark contrast to the rough and worn finishes of the chosen location.</span></div>

If you're visiting from <a href="http://www.abigailahern.org/current-obsessions/emily-henson/">Abigail Ahern</a>'s blog, then hi. hello. how's it going?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you're not, then you should head over there for a little <a href="http://www.abigailahern.org/current-obsessions/emily-henson/">Q&A </a>on me that she featured last week.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
She's one of my favourite designers - the undisputed queen of dark and moody interiors - and I frequently pop into her <a href="http://abigailahern.com/">shop</a> in Islington. Apparently she likes <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/US/modern-rustic">my book </a>which is a huge compliment, since she's written a couple herself. It's a weird thing when you discover that someone you admire admires you too. Who knew I could be someone's "current obsession"?</div>

<span style="text-align: left;">Since I've been a neglectful blogger for so long I thought I'd better explain myself. The ugly truth is that I've been locked in my room writing a book and it aint pretty. If anyone ever told you book writing was glamorous (do they say that?) they are lying. Book writing is painful. It involves many hours of staring at a blank screen and thinking of ways to procrastinate: suddenly cleaning the scale off the bathroom taps seems like something I should really be doing; or maybe it's time to </span>darn my socks (how do you even do that?); or <span style="text-align: left;">colour code and alphabetise my wardrobe (anoraks, belts, cardigans...)</span></div>

Since I last wrote I've been a very busy girl. I've managed to rent out my house in LA again (see the last post), I've helped <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> open another UK store in the lovely city of Bath, and I've been to Morocco to shoot three more houses for my next book. I thought since I can't yet show you any of the houses we photographed, I'd post some of my favourite snapshots from the trip. I've never been anywhere like Morocco before and it was pretty mind-blowing. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
At the beginning of the drive to the airport I saw camels on the beach - it was stunning - and I didn't ask the cab driver to pull over so I could take a photo. I regretted it the whole way, so when Katya spotted goats in trees, we asked the cabbie to pull a quick u-turn and we jumped out. An old man, who probably waits there all day for gullible tourists like me, thrust a kid in my arms and asked for money. She was lovely and cuddly and immediately started to eat my shirt. But the goats in trees was something else! The deal is they just can't get enough of the Argan berries that grow in Morocco (you know that Argan oil that's now a big craze in beauty products?) and you know a goat isn't afraid of heights, so up they go to get the berries! It was one of those moments when I was aware of being really lucky to see something so weird and wonderful. </div>

As many of my regular readers will know, three years ago we left LA for London. We moved out of this adorable house in the very cool Los Angeles neighbourbood of Highland Park and headed to the rainy but amazing capital city where I grew up. We held onto the house in case of emergency (i.e. if we could no longer bear the cold of the UK) and have been renting it out ever since. Well the time has come to find new tenants, so I thought I'd share it here in case anyone fancied a cute cottage in northeast LA with it's own separate studio - music room, art room, sewing room, whatever - painted hardwood floors, and a huge three tiered backyard with raised vegetable beds, grapevines, apricot and apple trees, and various patios for sunning and entertaining. It has a sweet vintage style throughout and it's on a lovely street. Available June 5th. Rent available upon request.</div>

<br /></div>
I've been having such a fun few weeks. Working full time for <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/">Anthropologie</a> and working on my second book is no easy feat, but I have nothing but gratitude. I've worked enough crappy jobs in the past 15 years, so I know when to be grateful and not complain. And this is definitely one of those times. I'm busy, I'm tired, my house is messy, my dog is not getting walked as much as she would like, and my children ate ramen from the corner shop twice last week for dinner (they love it), but it's all good. Life is really good.<br />
<br />
Last week I was in Denmark for the first time to shoot two gorgeous homes for the next book. These images are from one of them, owned by an incredibly stylish (check out the shoe/socks combo above!) <a href="http://www.brandtsindoor.dk/">designer</a> and artist who was so welcoming, kind, and loads of fun. She also had the coolest mohawk - think chic punk.<br />
<br />
Both of the houses we visited had these round wooden coat hooks - they seem to be a Scandinavian thing. I found some at <a href="http://www.muuto.com/">Muuto</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the first night of shooting, just as we sat down to a late dinner, I had a frantic call from my teenage daughter asking me to send a selfie ASAP! Luckily I had a photographer with me so no need for the selfie. See below. Apparently I am going to be the subject of an Andy Warhol style painting for a school project...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The super stylish homeowner gave me the sweetest parting gift. One of the unusual things she used to sell at her <a href="http://www.brandtsindoor.dk/">shop</a> are used ballet slippers from the <a href="http://kglteater.dk/about-us/den-kongelige-ballet">Royal Danish Ballet</a>. I gushed over them and told her how I used to dream of wearing pointes as a little girl (little did I know how painful they are!) I also had a barbie with tiny pink rubber ballet shoes that tied around the ankle and I loved them so much. Now I have my very own pair. In satin, not rubber. And yes, the whole family - including the dog - has now tried them on. </div>

Next weekend I'm off to Morocco for the next book shoot. I'm treating it like a holiday since it may be the only bit of sun I see this year. I plan on working very hard during the day and laying in as much sunshine as possible after that. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'm so happy to say that with the success of <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Rustic-Explores-elements-together/dp/1849754454">Modern Rustic</a>, I've been given the opportunity to write another book. The next one is an idea I had when I was making the first book, so when my publisher <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/">RPS </a>approached me I knew exactly what it should be. I've been keeping it a secret for a while which is so hard! I'm not going to say what the title is until it comes out next Spring, but I'm really excited about it and it's going to be so much fun to make! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I was in The Netherlands last week, shooting an amazing home for the book, with photographer <a href="http://www.katyadegrunwald.com/">Katya de Grunwald.</a> Great name right? Check out her portfolio - she's so good. She's shot for Anthropologie, World of Interiors, Elle Decoration, and Martha Stewart Living to name a few. Sadly, <a href="http://www.catherinegratwicke.com/">Cath Gratwicke</a>, the photographer for Modern Rustic couldn't do the next book, but I know Katya is going to do an amazing job and we get along really well which is a plus when we have to travel so much together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'm thinking I need to have a pet section in the next one because every home I go to has the sweetest dogs and cats, who always seem to perfectly fit their interiors! Check out Lou Lou, a very clever and sweet Labradoodle who just wanted to play while we worked at this house near Amsterdam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Today I wanted to share with you a few photos of my house that are featured in the new issue of an Icelandic magazine called <a href="http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/e19399b8#/e19399b8/1">Home</a>. I was approached by them because of my <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/US/whats-new/modern-rustic">book</a> and they did a little interview to accompany the photos. (God knows how well it translated!) I'm never sure about having my house featured these days because it's not really the way I want it to look. It's just a mish-mash of bits I've picked up (ahem, on the street...) since we <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2011/03/moving-on.html">moved</a> back to London and I am my own worst critic, of course. My style has changed in the past few years and I don't think my home is an accurate reflection of it. But oh well, that's life right? Most of us can't just go out and get everything we want when we want it right? And there are definitely more important things in life to worry about. So I present to you, my mish-mash, jumble of a rented home!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The room with the blue wall is technically the dining room and is connected to the one with the red butterfly cabinet and sofa. A lot of old Victorian terraced houses in London have the same set up: two rooms that were once divided by a wall, but are now one big room. As a result there are two doors that go from the hallway into this room. As much as it feels <i>so</i>, so wrong, we did what many people do and blocked one of the doors. If you don't, it makes it really hard to place a sofa!</div>

<br />
<br />
It's been an interesting start to the year. LOTS has happened. I'm not going to lie, January was really hard. It's often a difficult month for <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2013/06/the-freelancers-dilemma.html">freelancers</a>, with work being kind of slow. February got a little better with a few interesting projects on the horizon. Now I've made it to March and I think it's going to be flippin' amazing!<br />
<br />
Last week I styled my last photo shoot for the next six months...<br />
<br />
...because I was offered a six month job by <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie Europe</a>, overseeing the visuals/display/merchandising in all their UK stores. So exciting! I'll be working with the 3 x London, 1x Guildford, and 1 x Edinburgh stores, as well as helping to open new ones (Bath, coming in May!) I actually didn't go after the job and it wasn't a direction I pictured myself taking. The head of Anthro Europe heard about me after <a href="http://yolandachiaramello.tumblr.com/">Yolly</a> and I did our <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2013/12/anthropologie-wreath-video.html">workshop/book launch</a> at their King's Road store, and she got in touch regarding the position.<br />
<br />
I worked for <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> years ago as a display artist in their Pasadena, California store. Click<a href="http://emilyhensonstudio.com/retail-display/"> here </a>to see some of my display work. I often forgot to take photos of the displays, so sadly I don't have too many. It was also before I became a stylist so the photos are pretty awful! One of my favourites is the one above, simply because it embodies the essence of 'creativity before consumption' so well. We had no display budget left, and we had this beautiful, expensive found furniture piece on the floor that no-one seemed to want to spend $9,000 on (!!) I had an hour to kill with most of the big display projects already completed, so I scrounged around the art room and with some drinking straws, wire, and hot glue, I made this tiny bicycle to put inside the cabinet, to jazz it up a bit. It was a miniature version of a large display we had in the window at the time and I really loved it.<br />
<br />
I'm really looking forward to putting my Anthro hat back on and getting stuck in!<br />
<br />
(P.S. Did I mention I'm doing another book.....?)<br />

I love the whole manicure/pedicure thing, but the truth is I usually scuff up my nails before I've even paid and left the salon. You know that moment when you reach for your credit card and scrape your pinkie on your purse zipper? Yeah that's me, every time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But all of this week I'm working on that coffee shoot again and the client asked both me and the food stylist to get our nails done so we can double as hand models. I'm not complaining. No way. There are much worse things to be doing on a Sunday afternoon than having my hands pampered at someone else's expense. But as I type this, I am wearing rubber gloves. That's all I'm saying. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
For all those sweet young girls who email me asking how to become a stylist, I say this: be prepared to do weird things. Like put on both the photographer's shirt and his assistant's t-shirt, tuck a piece of linen into your neckline like a gigantic bib and hold very still and at just the right angle a takeaway box with hot coffee, perfectly foamed by the food stylist.Then, when it's decided that the linen can be seen in the shot, an embarrassed assistant will stand by your bum and hold up the fabric for about 20 minutes while the perfect shot is captured. Pretty awkward. If you think you can do that with a smile on your face, then you'll be fine.<br />
<br />
Next time you see a close up picture of a coffee and a muffin at your local coffee chain, picture this scene and remember that things are not always what they seem in the land of photography and styling.<br />

Like, "Hey you don't mind babysitting for me on Friday night do you?" or "Can I borrow those Manolo Blahnik's, the ones you just got?" or "You don't mind doing a little video do you? For IKEA..."<br />
<br />
The lovely<a href="http://www.ikeafamilylivemagazine.com/gb/en"> IKEA Family Live</a> team did just that when we were in Budapest late last year to style a home. It was hot, I was sweating and wearing not very attractive shorts, my hair was tied back and I had no make-up on. <i>AND</i> I don't necessarily love being on camera (although I'm getting better at it), even a harmless little iPhone one. But when IKEA asks, you really don't say no.<br />
<br />
Weird and cool to see my big old face on the <a href="http://www.ikeafamilylivemagazine.com/gb/en">IKEA Family Live</a> page though, even if it is <i>really</i> freckly. (I always forget how damn freckled I am until I see photos). <a href="http://www.ikeafamilylivemagazine.com/gb/en/article/35947">Click over</a> to see what I'm going on about.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Disclaimer:</u> I am of course totally joking. I didn't hate it at all. It is a huge honour to be included on the IKEA Live website. I just wish I'd done my hair and makeup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Second disclaimer:</u> I do not own a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes for anyone to borrow. I prefer to pay my rent and feed my children. But perhaps when they've left home.....</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For the past couple of years I've been thinking about teaching some styling workshops. Every week I get emails from young women asking for advice on how to be a stylist or if I ever need an assistant or intern. It's actually really flattering because it doesn't feel like that long ago when I was doing the same. I once wrote to stylist <a href="http://selinalake.blogspot.co.uk/">Selina Lake</a> after I bought her book Bazaar Style. I was in LA, she was in London. It made no sense. But I emailed her anyway (She never wrote back, but I forgive her). Now I have my own book by the same publisher as hers - pretty mind-boggling! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anyway, I always write back to the sweet emails, but the truth is I only need so many shoot assistants. But it got me thinking - what if I held some workshops where I could teach whole groups of budding stylists the tricks of the trade? Or perhaps you're not interested in being a professional stylist but you want some tips to use at home. A couple of Christmases ago, I gave a series of <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2012/11/watch-out-martha.html">decorating talks</a> for the <a href="http://www.countrylivingfair.com/">Country Living Fair</a> and I was a nervous wreck. But this past Christmas, hosting the wreath workshop with <a href="http://yolandachiaramello.tumblr.com/">Yolly</a> at <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2013/12/anthropologie-wreath-video.html">Anthropologie</a> was a different story. It made me realise how much I enjoy sharing and teaching ideas, particularly in a laid back, casual, and fun environment. (Check out the video <a href="http://vimeo.com/81794668#">here</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So...if you or anyone you know is interested in a London-based day long workshop at a fab location house with lots of props to play with, send me an email (click <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/p/contact.html">here</a> for email address). I'm thinking about a weekend in late March for the first one, so sign up now. If there's enough interest, I'll send you more details regarding cost/schedule/location.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
One of the topics we might talk about: When to keep going and when to leave it alone. The four images here are a great example of one interiors set and its many tweaks. The first shot is perfectly fine, but it's when you keep going that the magic can happen. (It's a bit like that game "Spot the difference" isn't it? I used to LOVE those!)</div>

They've got nice clean and simple templates that are really good for photographers and stylists or anyone who wants the images to do the talking. There are no bells and whistles which I really like because my portfolio is so colourful, the backdrop needs to be clean. I'd been getting by with a blogspot site which was meant to be temporary while I moved to London, but I ended up using it for a couple of years and it was horrible. Anyway, I finally got around to it and have recently added some new work, so head over to <a href="http://emilyhensonstudio.com/">emilyhensonstudio.com</a> and tell me what you think. Make sure you click on the words "thumbnails" on the bottom left so you can see all the images in each gallery at once, like below. I hope you like it! Have a great weekend. xoxo<br />

I love discovering something special right on my own doorstep. I recently found this lovely little coffee shop called <a href="http://www.estersn16.com/">Esters</a>. It's less than 5 minutes walk from my house, tucked away on a residential street next to a pub. Actually, my husband found it and raved about their flat whites all week long. On Sunday morning, we wandered over. I waited outside with the dog while the family went in for coffees and hot chocolates. I got to admire the simple but sweet exterior and logo and couldn't help snapping a photo for <a href="http://instagram.com/lifeunstyled">Instagram</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/lifeunstyled">Twitter</a> (I'm @lifeunstyled on both). They also serve <a href="https://www.stjohngroup.uk.com/bakery/doughnuts/">St. John's</a> doughnuts which are pretty spectacular if you like a chewy, sugary jam doughnut as I do. Being from St. John, they are not your average doughnuts; unusual filling flavours like rhubarb and salted caramel custard take these to another level. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can find Esters at 55 Kynaston Road in Stoke Newington, North London. If you're in the area, bundle up, grab some coffee and the paper, head to <a href="http://www.hackney.gov.uk/clissold-park.htm#.Ut_re2TFIy4">Clissold Park</a> and park yourself on a bench. Nothing better.</div>

Early last Autumn I enlisted the help of photographer <a href="http://www.catherinegratwicke.com/">Catherine Gratwicke</a> (she did the photography for <a href="http://www.rylandpeters.com/new-year-new-you/modern-rustic">my book</a>) to help me with a story I was styling for <a href="http://anthologymag.com/blog3/issues/">Anthology</a> magazine's Sartorial issue. We headed to South London to the home of Kelly Schofield, Visual Manager for <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> London and her partner Taha Meziane. When I moved back to London in 2011 I met Kelly at the Regent's St store to discuss the possibility of working for Anthro again (I decided to go freelance instead). Later, when I saw snapshots of her home I knew Anthology would be interested in a story.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With high ceilings and freshly painted white floorboards, it is a deliciously calm, uncluttered home, but still full of character. Kelly and her partner Taha both work in the creative/interiors industry, a fact that is evident in the considered way they've decorated their home. Except for the odd pop of coral, yellow, and grey, Kelly and Taha have stuck with a really nice black, white and natural palette. I wish I could be disciplined enough to stick to the black and white code, but I just can't do it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I particularly love what they did to the wall in their bedroom. It's the sort of thing I used to do in my display days at Anthropologie. They roughly painted some muslin material onto the wall below the picture rail for a cool, raw effect. Not everyone's taste perhaps, but you know I love a bit of imperfection and roughness to offset the prettiness in a room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you can, I highly recommend picking up a copy of <a href="http://anthologymag.com/blog3/issues/">Anthology</a> for the full story. In the meantime, here are some of my favourites.</div>

Mine has been extreeeeeemely relaxing. We've been very lazy. We stayed in London and did very little. Lots of movie watching, walks in the park, afternoons in the pub. Very little shopping or party-going. All in all, it was lovely. Just what the family needed. However, I'm now itching to get back to work. Feeling a bit fidgety - you know that feeling?<br />
<br />
To get back into the world of interiors, I wanted to share with you some newly published images that I styled for the textile print designer <a href="http://www.amy-sia.com/">Amy Sia</a>. Amy is an Australian who moved to London about the same time as me and who designs beautiful pillows, scarfs, iphone/ipad covers, framed prints, and mugs. She hand paints the designs, scans them into her computer and then manipulates them, creating really vibrant, sorta psychedelic patterns.<br />

Hello to all of you clicking over from <a href="http://anthologymag.com/blog3/2013/12/16/a-home-for-the-holidays/">Anthology</a>! It's such a beautiful magazine run by two lovely ladies and I've been a fan since the beginning. My LA home appeared in Anthology's <a href="http://www.lifeunstyledblog.com/2011/05/anthology.html">Issue 3</a>, back in the Spring of 2011, just before we moved to London, and now they've got my London home on their blog just in time for Christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When my friend, photographer <a href="http://www.sarahhoganphoto.com/">Sarah Hogan</a> came to shoot the house, Johnny and I were getting ready to make some of our favourite Christmas baubles. It's such an easy and satisfying project, I thought I'd share a simple how-to today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4nr89yN9r989y0XDyB1Kr0lLS_4OsdoflXPhD6B7MG72SK41aQ79tSfr8vJXtA_ysstVuAcni4hyphenhyphenOM6G4JsCApxTd7jvlRPlujbbETidQkPwsc2zHTgOxnicCgPRsaxNkgtyGOFdBVgkL/s1600/Me+and+Johnny+making+baubles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4nr89yN9r989y0XDyB1Kr0lLS_4OsdoflXPhD6B7MG72SK41aQ79tSfr8vJXtA_ysstVuAcni4hyphenhyphenOM6G4JsCApxTd7jvlRPlujbbETidQkPwsc2zHTgOxnicCgPRsaxNkgtyGOFdBVgkL/s640/Me+and+Johnny+making+baubles.jpg" width="405" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h4>
All you need:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
*Styrofoam balls of any size. Ours were about 3" diameter and purchased at my local craft store for about 50p each. Balled up newspaper also works fine, your baubles just won't be as perfectly round.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
*Strips of fabric about a 1/2 inch wide, torn right off if you like a frayed edge or cut with scissors if you prefer it neater. (Do you know that trick where you can snip into the fabric and easily tear off a strip? Test it by tugging a bit where you snipped. If it gives, you can tear all down the length).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
*Hot glue or straight pins.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
*Skinny ribbon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h4>
How-To:</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Using the styrofoam balls (or balled up newspaper) as a base, wrap long strips of fabric around and around until the bauble is covered. When your fabric strip is all used up, put a dot of hot glue on the bauble and push the end of the fabric strip down onto it. Don't be alarmed, the glue will melt the styrofoam a bit, just push the fabric down quick without burning your fingers! If you're using the styrofoam balls, rather than newspaper, you could also secure the fabric with a straight pin, pushed down into the foam. If your fabric strip runs out but you're not done, just overlap the start of a new strip with the end of the old strip, and continue wrapping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When your last strip has been secured, wrap a thin piece of ribbon around, as shown in the photos below and tie in a bow. It helps to put a last pin or dot of glue to secure the ribbon. I usually do it right under where your bow will go. Finally, you can tie a little piece of ribbon on so you can hang it on the tree. I tie mine on where the bow is, just looping it under the ribbon that's around the bauble, and tying in a small knot. Alternatively you could attach an ornament hook directly under the ribbon bow and use that to hang it instead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And that's it! I collect fabric so every year I make a few more depending on what colours I'm doing each Christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<h4>
<b><i>Fabric Tip:</i></b> <span style="font-weight: normal;">Scour charity/thrift shops for shirts and skirts in interesting fabrics. I often buy things I wouldn't wear in a million years and add them to my fabric box for a future project. The first bauble pictured above is a Liberty print from a romper suit I bought at a charity shop (Can you picture me in a romper?!)</span></h4>
<div>
