Inspired Lighting

This is the picture that started me off. I've had it in my files for ages and I absolutely love it. It's all about that light, isn't it? It looks handmade and I don't mind admitting that I am totally going to make my own version. I'm lighting obsessed right now, mainly because I sold all my lamps when we moved to London thinking there was no point in bringing them since the plugs were different anyway. I'm a bit sad about a few of them I left behind - there are adapter plugs after all - and now I have to start from scratch.

In a really modern space, white floors, big windows, worn out vintage leather sofa, sheepskin rug - these patterned shades would be great, hung alone or in clusters. You could easily make your own by wrapping a plain white drum shade with patterned paper, easily found at one of those fancy paper shops.

A bare shade is a great thing - if you ever find them at junk shops, don't pass them up. It's such a simple idea, but who knew how good a bit of string could look.

Here's my version, done last year for my home in LA. I wrapped the frame in lengths of shredded fabric and hot-glued in place. Add a nicely shaped bulb that's not too bright and you're done.

More patterned drum shades. Love these so much, I think I've written about them before.

 This doily shade is bit on the country cottage side (which makes my skin crawl, no offence any country/shabby chic people out there). But put this doily lamp in the right setting - i.e. a cool modern rustic room - and it works for me.

Our old LA kitchen. Bare frame sprayed red (if I were doing it again I might not do red...) and hung with little scraps of vintage fabric sewn together.
