Eclectic Little Girl's Room

I'm currently working on a little girl's room in a really cool modern house near the beach. The owner has amazing taste and is, like me, a Brit who has lived in the States for many years. She wants to mix the clean modern lines of her gorgeous Southern California home with some eclectic, slightly off-kilter, colorful messiness often found in British homes.

Here's what's inspiring me:

I love all the mix of color and print grounded by the white wall and beds. It doesn't match and that's why it works. By the way this is the home of actor Mark Ruffalo and his wife and two kids.

The bed itself is amazing, must be custom-made. But it's all that white with pops of vintage looking print and color that I love. Really modern.

I never tire of flag garland. I'll be making some similar to this for this project.

Here's some I made for my office:

In real life, my office doesn't look quite like this. Look here and here if you don't believe me.

I want a couple of shades like this scattered around the room.

And a wall like this, but with more stuff. And with chalkboard paint behind it.

And maybe one of these from West Elm. On a desk or a bedside table for late night reading.

Next up:
My bathroom, before and after.

  2. Hi. I saw your before and after on Design Sponge. So cute. I just book marked your site under "fun color" because I'm always looking for tasteful examples. Thanks for the eye candy!

  5. These are great ideas! Especially love the top photo and the ragged flags in the third.

Here's a question I'm hoping you can answer: where can I get plain drum shades? I've been itching to cover some shades in beautiful fabrics, but haven't been able to find drum shades anywhere... any ideas?

  6. @Anna - I apologize for never responding! A year and a half later, here I am!
Typically in the States I've found plain drum shades at Target or Michael's crafts and those sorts of places. You could also look at thrift/charity shops - I'm always finding things there that can easily be updated in the way that you describe. As long as you're not using a really light/sheer fabric to re-cover it, the shade doesn't even have to be plain. Good luck! (Although I'm guessing you've already figured it out by now ;)

  7. Thanks, so much, Emily! No, actually your response is perfect timing -- we bought and renovated last year and now I'm needing to put in some lamps :)

    Thanks again!

Feel free to write me a note - I love getting them. It's a bit like getting an old-fashioned letter in the post. Thanks! x
